Senior leadership isn’t a title you inherit, it’s a capability you demonstrate long before you get the role. I’m interrupting the season with a short bonus episode built for finance managers who feel stuck in the tactical and want a clearer path to director-level and beyond. If you’ve ever wondered what executives actually look for when they evaluate “leadership potential,” I lay out the signals that consistently separate strong managers from true senior leaders.
We start with leadership through others: setting clear expectations, delegating meaningful ownership, and coaching people through hard work instead of stepping in as the default problem-solver. That shift matters in finance leadership because your influence only scales when your team can deliver reliably without depending on you for every answer. I also explain why developing your next layer of leaders creates space for the work senior leaders are expected to do: direction, resource decisions, and strategy.

Welcome And Bonus Setup
Stephen McLainHi, this is Stephen McLain of the Finance Leader Podcast. This is bonus episode number 104. Welcome everyone. This week I am interrupting my podcast season to bring to you this bonus episode about becoming ready for senior leadership. Now, at my core, I love talking about leadership, mindset, and also strategy. I'm always focusing on something different. When my peers are usually stuck in the tactical, I often find myself wandering into the strategic realm where I can better influence decisions and also direction. The Finance Leader Podcast is often seen as helping the middle, focusing on those team managers to become more strategic and thus more ready for career development and advancement to director and beyond.
Three Senior Leader Traits
Stephen McLainSo I want to highlight three important senior leadership traits to help you advance to senior leader roles.
Lead Through Others
Stephen McLainNow, number one, leadership through others. They set clear expectations, delegate meaningful ownership, coach people through difficult work, and build a team that can deliver reliably without depending on the leader to solve every problem. Senior leaders must develop their subordinate leaders and team because it is the team that will carry the workload while you give direction, manage resources, and work on strategy.
Decision Support That Matters
Stephen McLainNumber two, decision support. Strong decision support starts by clarifying the choice leaders need to make. The finance leader brings together relevant facts, assumptions, options, and trade-offs, then offers a clear recommendation while explaining the risks and what to monitor afterward.
Leading Change And Uncertainty
Stephen McLainAnd finally, number three, leading change and uncertainty. Senior leaders help the organization respond when conditions or assumptions shift. They identify what has changed, assess its likely effects, use scenarios where outcomes are uncertain, and adjust plans or processes while preserving sound controls and clear accountability.
The Real Signal Of Readiness
Stephen McLainThe strongest signal for senior leadership potential is a shift from managing a finance function to improving how the organization makes and executes decisions. A capable manager keeps their teams running well. A senior leader connects that work to strategy, operations, risk, and results. Have a great rest of your week. Thank you.
